It is a book written about the Wesleyan Christian Academy Men’s Soccer Program. I wanted to share a breakdown of their program with you. Robbie Hinton and I both read the book. We would like for our programs to look like this. If you are interested in formulating a plan to match the below let me know, and we can sit down together and see what we can do. - [Narrow the Focus](https://carychristianschool.org/narrow-the-focus-2/) - I remember reading an article back when I was coaching football receivers regarding focus. The article had two stories. The first story was about Steve Largent. Steve, at the time (1989), led the NFL for touchdown catches above notable receivers like Jerry Rice. Steve was asked how he had done this in spite of the fact that self-admittedly he was not the speed or size athlete like Jerry Rice and the others. He said it was an issue of focus. He told the story of how, while in high school, he would put a dot on the ends of a football during summer practice. His focus was on catching the “dot,” not the ball. Once the season started the dots came off and the ball looked like a pumpkin!

It is an article written about the French World Cup team’s victory over England in the quarterfinals. Here are a few quotes from the article of note.
- [Hard Things](https://carychristianschool.org/hard-things/) - I read an article this week about a college quarterback that wanted to transfer after his second season. He was redshirted his first year and he was played sparingly his second year. He went to his coach and asked him about being able to transfer (this was before the portal). The coach told him he would grant his request but also said, “It’ll be the biggest mistake of your life. You came here to be the best. You came here because of the great competition. If you walk away now, you’ll always wish you had stayed and tried to compete. You’ll always wonder what would have happened if you had stayed.” The player could have blamed his lack of playing time on the coach, other players, or just bad luck, but he did not. He accepted the fact that this was a hard thing and he had a choice to make. He made the choice and stayed. I wonder what the story would have been for Tom Brady had he left? But he did not. He did a hard thing.
- [Dysfunctional Team, or Functional Team](https://carychristianschool.org/dysfunctional-team-or-functional-team/) - At one of our leadership meetings, Mr. Hinton talked about Patrick Lencioni’s book “The 5 Dysfunctions of at Team.” I think there are really good insights for us as you all begin to build your teams this season. Lencioni presents these in a pyramid format with each level progressing toward further dysfunction, and in the end, a dysfunctional outcome. I want to present to you his thoughts on dysfunction from a sport’s team perspective, and then as if a team did the opposite, built a functional team with a different outcome. - [Team Building - When the Game Stands Tall](https://carychristianschool.org/team-building/) - One of my favorite books (and movies) is When the Game Stands Tall by Neil Hayes. This is the story of Coach Bob Ladouceur and the De La Salle high school football program in California in the late ’90s and ’00s when they held the longest winning streak for a high school team at over 150 wins over 7 years. The book is about the coach and how the team did it. As I read, it I took notes on quotes or facts about what the author and coach felt made them successful. De La Salle is a Jesuit school and Coach Ladouceur was not only the head football coach, he was the Bible teacher. His perspectives on team building and young people I found interesting because their success was based more on building relationships within the team than it was on the type of offense or defense they ran. Below are some of the more interesting bits I ran across. There is so much good stuff here. I hope you enjoy.
- [Goal Setting](https://carychristianschool.org/goal-setting/) - I never won a state championship as a high school player. I did watch one from the inside (and how it developed) when I was at Westminster (my previous school). Please forgive the length but this is a story worth telling. This particular soccer season started with lots of predictions of bad results. The team had lost a D1 player the year before and there was only 1 senior on the returning team. To my recollection there were maybe 2-3 juniors, and a bunch of sophomores, and a lot of 9th, 8th, and even a couple of 7th graders (we did not have a MS team). This team played in the 1A-3A division of Alabama public schools (AHSAA). Alabama has 7 divisions, so this division included schools that might have as many as 1000 students K-12 (we had about 500 total).
- [Goal Setting, Part 2](https://carychristianschool.org/goal-setting-part-2/) - As you get deeper into your season, here is another story on the power of goals. One of my favorite books is Goals by Brian Tracy. There is a particular story in the book that I think is powerful and worth sharing. Tracy refers to a study from another book, What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School, by Mark McCormack. The study was conducted between 1979 and 1989. In 1979 the graduates of the MBA program were asked, “Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?” It turns out 3% had written goals and plans. 13% had goals but not in writing and 84% had no specific goals at all. In 1989 the researchers interviewed the graduates again to check the metrics. This particular soccer season started with lots of predictions of bad results. - [Doing Your Best?](https://carychristianschool.org/doing-your-best/) - I will admit that the movie Facing the Giants is hokey and not the best cinema in the history of cinema. But, I have always loved the death crawl scene. I love the fact that the boy was able to accomplish more than 70-80% more (100 yards vs. 20-30 yards like he said) than he thought he was capable of. I love the fact that the boy used that moment later in the movie to go the extra four downs when he didn’t think he had anything left. I love the fact that the other boys lives were also changed when they saw their leader prove that each of them had more to give than they were giving. But, for some reason, which I now understand, there was something about that scene that bothered me.
