7th Grade is Reading Johnny Tremain. – “The shot heard around the world” is a well-known quote, and the fight for freedom began there for America. Written by Esther Forbes, Johnny Tremain explores the development of one central character, a young boy who pursues his interest in silversmithing but is overcome by the consequences of bad decisions. Throughout Johnny’s life, his experiences, and his adventures, the reader encounters the themes of friendship, humility, and social class. Set during the 1700s right before the start of the Boston Tea Party, which led to the Revolutionary War, Johnny learns how to navigate life, taking ownership of his responsibilities and acting upon the virtues of fortitude, justice, and hope. This novel encourages its readers to understand the importance of making good decisions, surrounding themselves with good friends, and pursuing their aspirations regardless of the obstacles.
