Seminar

What is seminar? The central vision for seminar is to help our rhetoric school students think through the great questions of life in a manner that is grounded in biblical thinking, moral and intellectual virtue, and an awareness of the great thinkers of the past. Rhetoric School students have big questions about life, including: Who is God? Who am I?  What matters to me? What should matter to me? What is wisdom?  How should I think about happiness? About success? About wealth? About other people? About myself? About government? Do my desires matter? Is there a purpose to beauty? Is there a purpose to suffering? Why am I being educated? How do I know what I know is reliable? What is truth?  Do any of the things I’m learning in school and church have practical application for life? How should I engage with people I fundamentally disagree with? What does it mean to be a Christian in America? How should Christians think about self-government?…and so many more. In seminar, students and teachers read and discuss what thinkers of the past have said about these questions in an effort to help students arrive at answers of their own–or at least to help them wrestle with the questions in a meaningful way. The students have the opportunity to listen and enter into the Great Conversation about how humans should live in light of these questions. Each year aligns with the literature and history curriculum, and the readings for each year are organized around a central question.

    • 9th Grade (Classical)What is wisdom? Can man attain wisdom?
    • 10thGrade (Medieval)How can we rightly order our loves to desire what God desires?
    • 11thGrade (Modern)How can we understand and live well in a world of conflicting ideas and values?
    • 12thGrade (American)How should Christians understand self-government both in the personal and political realms.
