Drive and Surround: From North Carolina Day to Protocol

|

North Carolina Day

This is a drive and surround school. In the end, it is Christian families, committed to a Christ-centered approach to education that creates the magic we love about this place.

When we describe Cary Christian School as a Christian and a classical school, we are trying to explain our distinctive approach to education. The principles of Christian education and classical drive the work of the classroom.

There is, however, a third distinctive: the centrality of the family. Never mind the fact that the word family is not in our mission statement or in our statement of faith, this distinctive is, in the end, more determinative of action than any particular principle of classical and Christian education.

Senior Thesis Presentations

To be clear, God called me to be a classical and Christian educator. Watching our seniors stand and deliver their thesis gives me great joy. It is truly impressive, come and see for yourselves the culminating impact of 13 years of engaging in transformative conversations about great ideas. Secondly, if you ask our graduates why they love this place, they begin to discuss their teachers. What they do and why they do it is quite remarkable. However, ask our teachers what makes their efforts effective, and they will tell stories about parents.

This is a drive and surround school. In the end, it is Christian families, committed to a Christ-centered approach to education that creates the magic we love about this place.

Note this fact: we have won more state championships than any other school in our conference. Ask our Athletic Director to explain the secret. Coach Poore will tell you stories about parents who drive their children to do hard things, and parents who surround their children with love and support.

Protocol

Earlier this month, our juniors and seniors celebrated Protocol, the CCS version of prom, organized by our Dean of Students, Mrs. Hillsgrove. It was a beautiful night, themed around the Great Gatsby, as students enjoyed swing dancing with their friends. According to Mrs. Hillsgrove, at one point, she noticed that a “mosh pit” was forming at the center of floor. Thus, she thought it would be wise to see who was in the center and what he or she was doing. It was Mr. Morgan, their chemistry teacher. That’s the magic we feel. Now, ask Mrs. Hillsgrove to explain how she creates moments like that. She would begin to tell stories about parents who drive and surround.

For 13 years, from North Carolina Day to Protocol, students have engaged in transformative conversations about great ideas. They have pursued excellence in athletics and in the arts. They have had fun together. It is a remarkable place. It works because of you. Thank you for letting us do what we love, in a place that loves what we do.
